A Good Night’s Sleep (if you’re lucky)

We’ve recently had two Friday 13ths in a row. Now, whether you’re superstitious or not, the negative aspects of the day are often referenced, acknowledged or unceremoniously thrust at us by advertisers, friends and colleagues alike. That’s why I was encouraged when the most recent one shared a date with World Sleep Day.

Organised by The World Sleep Society and held on the Friday before Spring Equinox each year, it’s all about raising awareness of healthy sleeping habits, highlighting disorders and making us aware of the physical and mental health benefits of a good night’s sleep.

Now it may seem obvious, but sleep is the cornerstone to everything we do. Getting enough sleep can help with so much, but when we have problems and worries in our lives, it’s often not that simple. If we happen to wake up in the middle of the night, problems which may seem trivial by the light of day can take on huge significance.

And if we’re grieving, lack of sleep is often a huge issue. Whether it’s worrying about getting our loved-ones estate in order, feeling too mentally drained to sleep or just feeling the sheer weight of the knowledge that they are no longer by our side, sleep is often hard to come by. Then, there’s the vicious circle: No sleep, no energy to do anything, lying awake because we’re worrying about not having energy to do anything.

If you’re finding that getting a good night’s sleep is a problem for you, then there’s a good chance that talking through your issues will help. And, as physical exercise can help with sleep hygiene too, perhaps a walk and talk counselling session in Chorley would be even better.
